Details
HADLEIGH BENFLEET ROAD TQ 78 NE 1/5 No. 241. (Shipwrights) 30-10-79 - II*
House. Circa 1937 by Wells Coates for the Director of Ekco. Walls rendered and painted, flat roof with curved super structure. Roof shelter over. Central chimney stack. 2 storeys. Angled staircase to left leading to first floor full width balcony with metal rails, central 2 light metal doors and 2 light window with door to right. Stairs to right return lead to roof. Ground floor, 2 and 3 light windows, 3 light door to right. Rear (south) face, recessed ground floor, re-inforced concrete piloti supports to first floor, both floors fully glazed. Piloti supports to left (east) return. In 1937 Wells Coates was designing radio cabinets for Ekco, together with their factory at Southend-on-Sea. Designed under the influence of Le Corbusier (Villa Poisey). "Wells Coates a Monograph" Sherbon Contacuzino, pub. Gordon Frazer pp 85-88.
