4/96 Hawkin's Harvest 23.2.81 (Formerly listed under Waltham's Cross) - II
House. Mainly c.1600, with a fragment of a C15 house, extended in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 5 bays facing NW, with axial stack in second bay from left end, external stack at right end, and one bay of a late medieval hall house to the rear of the left bay. Single-storey lean-to extension in rear angle. Large C20 extension to left. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 4 C20 casements. First floor, 6 C20 casements. C20 door in lean- to porch. Roof half-hipped at both ends. Grouped diagonal shafts on main stack. The single bay to the rear has a chamfered axial beam with step stops, joists (plastered to the soffits) supported on pegged clamps, jowled posts, and a roof rebuilt in the C17, with some re-used smoke-blackened rafters. The main building has a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops in the left bay, 2 chamfered transverse beams with bar stops in the right section, and plain joists of horizontal section throughout. 2 large wood-burning hearths, the left hearth having an oven door but no oven, the right hearth having a chamfered mantel beam with bar stops. Jowled posts, heavy framing. Late C18 corner cupboard with spherical top and shaped shelves, the latter slightly altered. RCHM 47.
