GV II*

House. Late C14, altered in late C16, C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles and slate. 2-bay hall facing NE, with late C16 stack in left bay against rear wall. Storeyed service bay to left, 2-bay parlour/solar crosswing to right. C20 single-storey lean-to extensions to rear, roofed with corrugated asbestos. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 2 C20 casements, one early C19 sash of 9 lights, one splayed bay of 4-16-4 lights. First floor, 3 early C19 sashes of 9 lights. C20 door in gabled porch. Crosswing is jettied to front, with 2 plain brackets. Front half of roof raised approx. one metre, of low pitch and slated, remainder of normal pitch and tiled. Crosswing hipped at rear. Stack has ovolo-moulded cornice and rebuilt concertina shafts. Jowled posts. The hall has one complete service doorway with 2-centred arch of 2 durns with quadrant moulding, and part of the adjacent doorway, blocked. Wide wood-burning hearth with ogee-moulded mantel beam, the moulding mitred to turn downwards at the ends, re-used from a timber-framed chimney; brickwork repaired at back and left. Bread oven, with introduced iron door. Inserted floor with chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists of vertical section, early C17. Edge-halved and bridled scarfs in both wallplates. The crosswing has a chamfered binding beam with mortices for former arched braces, and shutter groove for unglazed window at the front. Cambered tiebeam. Central tiebeam of hall missing, front rafters present but severed for raised front wall. Both roofs are heavily smoke-blackened, with smoke vent at rear of crosswing; some original wattle and daub in main roof between hall and service bay. Both roofs have trenched collars, with no evidence of collar-purlins or crownposts. This house retains a number of early features, the service doorway being of unusual interest. RCHM 15.
