3/173 Brambles Farmhouse

- II

Cottage. C17. Timber framed, plastered with frame exposed, roofed with concrete tiles. 2 bays facing S, with original internal stack against rear wall, left of centre, and original full-length outshut to the rear. One storey with attics. 2 C20 metal casements, and one more in gabled dormer. C20 door at front of C20 gabled porch. Gablet hip at left end of roof. At the right end this cottage abuts on a later brick house, which forms a separate dwelling. The exposed framing of the left return shows that the rear outshut is fully jointed and pegged, integrated with the frame of the main part. Primary straight bracing, exposed externally and internally. In the right bay, chamfered axial beam, and plain joists of square section jointed to it with soffit tenons with diminished haunches. Large wood-burning hearth facing to right. Floor structure ceiled in left bay. The concrete roof tiles, at the time of survey (November 1985) were well weathered, difficult to distinguish from handmade red clay tiles.
