House, now 2 houses. Late C14, altered in C19. Timber framed, partly faced with brick, plastered and weatherboarded. Main range of 2 bays facing S, with C19 internal stack at left end. To right, 3-bay crosswing (originally longer) with C19 external stack to right, enclosed by no. 10, biarket End (item 9/136, q.v.). 2 high storeys with attics. Ground floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 12 lights in segmental arches. First floor, 3 similar sashes in moulded architraves. Underbuilt jetty, faced with plastered brick to first-floor level. No. 2 has a 6-panel door, bottom panels flush, top panels glazed, no. 4 has a C20 door, both in segmental arches. Continuous roof half-hipped at left end. Closely-spaced plain joists of horizontal section, jointed to binding beams with low-central tenons (C.A. Hewett, English Historic Carpentry, 1980, figure 291). No. 4 has a plain brace 0.14 metre wide to the axial beam, and an underbuilt jetty at the back also. Storey heights, 3 metres and 2.29 metres respectively. In the rear bay of no. 2, the joists to left of the bridging beam are moulded; the joists to right are plastered. A further bay extending to the rear is reported to have been demolished c.1930. No. 4 has at the rear of the upper storey a blocked doorway with 4-centred head, believed to have been to a former stair tower. Cambered tiebeams with mortices for crownposts. In no. 2 is a length of moulded and crenellated cornice, nailed to right wall of front ground- floor room when inspected in June 1987. A similar length of carved timber has been removed from no. 4, now stored in a shed at the rear. On the first floor of no. 4 a partition wall has been faced with C18 beaded pine boards; other similar boards have been removed to a partition on the ground floor. In no. 4, on the ground floor, double-ogee moulded joists (reported to have come from a demolished house at Sudbury, Suffolk) have been used as posts and to frame a C20 partition. Other introduced features. Original floorboards. RCHM 58.
