House. Circa 1700, altered in C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 4 bays facing S, with axial stack one bay from right end. Early C19 extension of one bay to right. Large extension in front of right half with side stacks, mid-C19. C19 single-storey wing to rear of main stack, of red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with slate. 2 C20 small 2-storey extensions with flat roofs to rear of main range. 2 storeys. The front extension has 2 full-height splayed bays, each with 3 sashes at each floor, with marginal lights. Flush 6-panel door and plain overlight in doorcase with fluted jambs and moulded flat canopy. Ashlared plaster, dentilled and moulded cornice, plain parapet. The main range has 2 C19 casements on each storey. C19 casements to rear. Axial beams of vertical section with asymmetrical chamfers, plain joists of vertical section. Primary straight bracing in walls. 2 large wood-burning hearths of 0.23 metre brickwork, one blocked. One first-floor room is ceiled with tongued and grooved softwood boards, c.1900. Stair of high- quality workmanship of similar date, with carved newels, slender barley-sugar balusters, moulded handrail, possibly of the Coggeshall school. Clasped purlin roof of main range incorporating some smoke-blackened medieval rafters. Roof of front extension is of hand-sawn softwood. Deeds from c.1720 in the possession of the owner. Shown in a map of 1732 (Essex Record Office, D/DU 19/3).
