BURES HAMLET TL 9034 WATER LANE
5/107 NO. 34 AND 36 II Pair of cottages C17 with C19 extension and C16 fragment. Timber framed with painted brick facade. Other walls rendered. South face of roof is hung in handmade clay plain tiles. North face in slate. 2 axial brick stacks. Each cottage single bay. Shared stack with winding stairs on south side. C19 rear extension comprises kitchen on ground floor with bedroom above C20 casement windows and 2 C20 doors. On west gable end of NO. 36 facing outward is a fireplace opening now bricked in but still with its original mantel beams with stop chamfer moulding and brick jambs. A section of cross frame with swept jowls to posts, tie beams, and cut off wall plate also survives. The stack has been adapted to serve No.36 but is a remnant of an earlier timber framed house to the immediate west demolished earlier in C20. No.'s 34 and 36 were built up against this structure. The rear roof is at a much shallower pitch than the front face to accommodate the rear addition. The whole roof was raised probably in C19. Interior of 36 includes chamfered spine beam with drawn out stop., vertical section joists and exposed studwork on party wall. C17 fireplace opening with chamfered mantel beam. Adjoining cupboard has strap hinges. 12 inch wide oak floor boards to upper floors. Water lane is wrongly shown on the O.S map as brook street.
