Details

HAWKHURST WATER LANE TQ 73 SE (east side) 10/463 Woodsden GV II House. C16 or earlier altered C17, and C18-C19. Timber framed and clad with red brick and tile hung, with part exposed frame to return and rear elevations. Plain tiled roof. Two storeys with hipped roof and central stacks. Regular fenestration of 2 three light and central 2 light wooden casements on 1st floor, and 2 tripartite sashes on ground floor. Central boarded door in half-timbered gabled porch with moulded bargeboard. Single storey extension to left with sash and truncated stack at end left. Lower half hipped 2 storey wing to rear, with small additional C19 single storey extensions in part in English bond, and large C17 arch offset stack projecting at rear left (base within C19 extension). Right return with exposed studding (under restoration at time of survey). Interior: main range with full frame visible, with ogee-bracket moulded beams, others with tongue-stopped chamfers. Inglenook fireplaces. Renewed clasped purlin roof. Rear range with moulded beams, many re-used from earlier frame with window mullions mortices, chamfers and mouldings, all with inverted date: 1627; the whole frame iron-strapped C17/C18 and under restoration at time of survey. Bakehouse attached to rear stack originally with exterior hatches, bread oven and copper brick lined cellar.
