II
C17, early C20. The site of a grange of Waverley Abbey. H-plan with a central projecting porch, and near-symmetrical form; 2 storeys and attic. Old tile roofing. On the main (south-east) front the south side wing has the original red brick gable, with cut brick forms and mouldings. At the top is an escutcheon, then a moulded and dentilled band above the attic window (a 2-light old leaded casement) a moulded and dentilled cornice at eaves level has Ionic pilasters (with moulded bases) at each side, a first-floor band, rubbed flat arches to the ground-floor, and a plinth. The north side wing is similar but is modern, with a ground-floor bay; the 2-storeyed porch (1920) again repeats the design, with a rusticated opening. The recessed parts of the front are in old brickwork, English bond, without the band, with a mullion and transom window to the south. The south-west face has 3 windows and plain pilasters; the north-west gable of the south wing is similar to the front but without the pilasters. Shafted stacks. Solid wood casement frames, with leaded lights. Some interior C17 panelling. The north-east part of the house is early C20, but is set back and uses traditional forms and materials, with hipped roofing and dormers.
