15/2 Greywell Tunnel Portal

- 20.11.85 - II

1792. Entrance to canal tunnel (passing westwards) with a facade of red brick (English bond), having a round arched opening, stone keystone and impost blocks, the parapet slopes from the centre, with brick bracketting, to rusticated square piers at each side. There is a rounded panel at each side, and above the arch a rectangular panel containing a plaque, with the wording:- GREYWELL TUNNEL BUILT 1792. Length 1230 yards. Portal restored 1975. HCC. Brick cutwaters.
