south of Cowley Manor

GV II

Steps and retaining walls to terraces south of Cowley Manor.
Probably built c1860 for James Hutchinson. Ashlar. Retaining
walls to three terraces; centrally placed double flight of steps
from the upper terrace; single flights of steps at the centre of
the other terraces. Pedestals with urns, some now lost, to the
upper terrace; steps down with foliate scrollwork to the
balustrade; pilasters becoming pedestals on the south side of the
steps, two retaining urns; small rectangular panels to the
pilasters decorated with the figures of the four seasons. Stone
bench seat at the eastern end of the upper terrace. The retaining
wall to the middle terrace also retains some urns.
