Details
PAINSWICK THE VATCH, Slad SO 80 NE 5/307 Abbey Farmhouse GV II Detached house. Mid C17 with c19 refenestration. Coursed limestone rubble to flush quoins, stone slate roof, 3 gable stacks, part brick, part stone. A typical cross-gabled Cotswold house with central 2-storey porch; later, lower wing attached at left gable. To road is 2½ storeys two full gables 3 windows, 3-light to ground and first floors and 2-light in gables; a single light at first floor to left of porch. Upper level of porch has 2-light. All these are stone mullioned with pointed heads to lights contained under stepped hoods, with iron casements and leading with interlaced top. Flush, but lower wing, left has C20 two light over 3-light casements in one bay. Central doorway in porch steep pointed arch with chamfered surround, under a continuous string, but as the front wall only; inner door is plank and nail-head, with an early lock and cross-battened back. Rear of building similar to front, with 2 gables, but blocked lights to gables and at centre first floor a 2-light wood casement with leading, and at ground floor a 2-light wood casement to pointed heads, a 2-light recessed chamfer with hood and a 3-light as at front. Extension has 2-light under 3-light wood casement. Interior not fully inspected. Entrance hall has stone flagged floor; some chamfered beams. An old iron hand pump remains for the kitchen. A splendid house, set high above the Lane and looking across Slad Brook Valley.
