PAINSWICK EDGE SO 80 NE 5/372 Edge House

II Large detached house. C17, C18, large extensions and modifications Cl9. Squared coursed limestone, near-ashlar on south front, stone slate roofs, some concrete tile. Probably originated as C17 L-plan house, but now extended and enveloped on south and east sides. To the road a complex elevation: at left a hipped block with cornice and parapet with C20 rebuilt stack, pilaster at corner; a good closed pediment. Ionic porch with small arched lights to returns and containing fielded 6-panel door with transom light. In the same plane a C17 gable with blocked 2-light in gable, over 2-light with transom, and at ground floor a blocked 2-light, left: all these with stopped drips. Also a casement, probably original position for door, and two small C20 single lights. Stepped forward a further gable with blocked casement above a 2-light at first floor, then a short section with eaves over a 12-pane and 6-pane at eaves level above a plain casement. Last section to right further stepped forward, probably a service wing, contains C20 part-glazed door. The main return, left, is with parapet and cornice to 2-storey, 3-window front, all 4-pane sashes, those in centre narrower, and a plain mid-string broken at centre, possibly over former door. Garden front, to south, in two sections: left is hipped 2-storey 2-window, a 6 and 4-pane sash at each level, then principal block, cornice and parapet, 2-storey, 3-window: left is 4-pane sash over a flat-roofed canted bay with 4-pane sashes, centre has arched opening over glazed door, both with margin bars, and right a 2-storey canted bay with 2-pane over 4-pane sashes. A further gabled wing lies to the left, partly built in to rising ground. Interior: the early gabled range has a series of transverse beams with chamfer to run-out stops, small Cl9 stick baluster stair. Various changes of level at upper (west) end of house. The later C19 block has a good stone dog-leg stair with decora- tive wood balustrade and mahogany handrail. The segmental bays have lift-up shutters contained in the 'stall board' or seat at low level.
