7/143 and 8/143 Painswick Hotel (formerly 21.10.55 listed as Gwynfa Hotel) GV II Detached house, now hotel. Late c18, altered and extended 1902 and 1903 by Detmar Blow. Limestone, ashlar, stone slate roofs generally, but part of main block with concrete tile. A compact symmetrical late Palladian house, extended at the back, and to the right with a 2-storey wing; interior also modified, but principal corps-de-logis retains its integrity. Three storeys and basement, built across steep slope dropping away to the road to the south-east. Main front is 1:3:1 windows, all glazing bar sashes in plain reveals; central first floor is a Venetian window with square Doric pilasters and entablature to side lights; in central pediment a circular oculus. Basement level has 2 blocked openings and two horizontal paned lights. Centrally at main level is pair of C20 glazed doors under a transom light, in a pedimented Doric doorcase approached by a double flight of stone stairs swept out at bottom, simple wrought iron balustrade. At centre basement a plank door with studs in an arched head. Front has plinth, plat band and cill band at first floor, moulded cornice and blocking course; central 3-bays stepped forward. This ensemble returns right, and one bay to left. To right is a 2-storey wing terminating in a semicircular bay, dated IHS 1903; front includes an oculus over a Palladian window. Left return has one bay detailed as principal front, but with C20 French doors at ground level. Attached, in dressed coursed stone is 2-gabled 1903 extension, with 2-arched flat-roofed loggia set at half floor level to take account of changes in ground level. This block is in good 'Cotswold' style, with various stone mullioned casements set to stopped hoods; including, at ground floor, a large king-mullioned 4-light with transom. One gable is slightly set back from the C18 alignment, the other stepped forward to accommo- date the loggia. Beyond, left, is a decorative balcony balustrade with ball- finials. Three large chimney stacks with simple cappings; C18 block is hipped roof. Interior has stick baluster stair up to reception area with 1903 plastered ceiling and decorations.
