Anglican parish church. C12 and C15, restored 1868 by G.E. Street,
painting of interior by Rev. W. Wiggin and Clayton and Bell c1871.
Chancel and nave north wall, limestone rubble. Nave south wall and
porch, coursed squared and dressed stone. Tower, coursed squared
and dressed limestone. Stone slate roof. Nave with projecting
south porch, west tower and chancel. C12 chancel with clasping
buttresses at east end and buttressed side walls. Flat-chamfered
eaves cornice continued around east end. South side of chancel;
tall lancet with ogee curved cinquefoil head and stopped hood.
Two-light hollow-moulded stone-mullioned window with cinquefoil-
headed lights, carved spandrels within deep surround with hollow
and casement mouldings, stopped hood with scrolled stops. Small
round-headed C12 window in east gable end. Small rectangular light
with double-chamfered surround and shutter. North wall; 2-light
hollow-moulded stone-mullioned casement with carved spandrels,
cinquefoil headed lights and deep surround with hollow and casement
mouldings. Small round-headed light with flat-chamfered surround,
right. North wall of nave C12 with later flat-chamfered plinth.
Two round-headed lights, one C19 with flat-chamfered surround.
C19 plank door with decorative strap hinges, C19-early C20 surround
with C12 diapered tympanum. Three stage, Perpendicular tower with
diagonal buttresses with offsets and moulded plinth. Single
cinquefoil-headed light with stopped hood to 2nd stage on south.
Two-light belfry windows with blind quatrefoils, stopped hoods and
stone slate louvres. Battlemented parapet with string below with
carved head gargoyles placed centrally. Additional gargoyles in
the form of torsos incorporated in the third stage on the north and
south sides. Nave south walls rebuilt C15, 2-light window right of
porch, probably C17, with cinquefoil-headed lights, Perpendicular
style tracery, rectangular hollow-moulded surround with hood with
curved stops. Early stuflded plank door with C20 fillets within
porch with deep surround with hollow and casement mouldings and
hood with scrolled stops. C15 porch; flat-chamfered segmental-
headed entrance arch of 2 orders the inner rising from engaged
canted corbels. Stone bench seats inside porch. C19 rainwater
heads in form of castellated turrets on nave and chancel. Roof;
stepped coping and upright cross finials to gables of nave, chancel
and porch.
Interior; nave plastered with late C19 painted decoration
comprising outlining of dressed stone in purple and stencilled
flowers or continuous foliate decoration around all openings in
nave. Decoration possibly once more extensive around tower arch.
Choir and sanctuary and their respective arches painted similarly.
Choir arch outlined in a similar fashion to the openings in the
chancel. The splays of each windows lighting the choir are
decorated with stencilled flower and star motifs. Sanctuary arch
painted with zig-zag decoration. Walls of sanctuary decorated with
single blue flower motifs with tendrils each within block outlined
in purple to imitate masonry. Occasional large foliate roundels in
choir and sanctuary. Each quarter of quadripartite sanctuary vault
contains a painted seated figure (probably the four evangelists).
Tall, double-chamfered pointed arch from nave to tower with engaged
octagonal capitals. C12 choir arch with plain inner arch, roll-
moulded outer arch with chevron and star mouldings forming outer
surround. Jamb shafts to outer order with charming carvings of
pairs of doves on each capital. Sanctuary arch of 2 orders with
keeled jamb shafts with stalk capitals. C12 quadripartite ribbed
vault within sanctuary rising from low corbels with stiff stalk
capitals (showing the transition to Early English). Choir roof
panelled with painted star decoration. C19 roof to nave with arch-
braced collar with windbracing. Red tile floor to nave some
decorative encaustic tiling in nave and sanctuary. Round-headed
surround to C12 north door. Rebated Tudor-arched doorway to stairs
to former rood loft in south wall. Flat-chamfered Tudor-arched
access to former rood loft high up in wall above. Furniture and
fittings; painted C19 organ at base of tower. Octagonal,
Perpendicular font with quatrefoil decoration on each face, inside
south door. C19 pews. C20 pulpit incorporating C17 carved oak
panels (probably reused). Picture of The Last Supper on north wall
of nave. C19 stained glass in east and north windows of sancutary,
in north window of choir, in one window on south wall of nave and
in nave west window.
