Bale tomb to the wife of ----------- Shayler of Donnington. C17.
Limestone. Moulded base, 4 kneeling mourners with hands clasped in
prayer along each side each mourner within a blind round-headed
arch with keystone and imposts flanked by Tuscan style columns in
slight relief. Raised palm leaf decoration within sunken panel at
east end. Partially legible inscription in latin at west end.
Capping stone with moulded margin and dentil decoration around its
lower margin. Semi-circular 'bale' stone above with ribbing on two
directions and scalloped decoration at either end. A very rich
and early example of the monumental designer's art.
