Two chest tombs to members of the Chadwell family (q.v. The Manor
House) and 4 bale tombs probably also to members of the Chadwell
family. Early C17. Limestone. Tombs from south: unidentified
bale tomb with moulded plinth, outline of 3 blind round-headed
arches each with Keystone and imposts on each side, foliate
decoration in spandrels above. Arches flanked by Tuscan style
columns in slight relief. Raised palm leaf decoration within left
and right-hand panels. Raised central panel bearing a heraldic
shield with zig-zag in relief. Wreath of leaves around shield.
Sunken panel at east end with no visible inscription. Plain panel
at west end. Plain capping stone with roll moulding along lower
edge. Semi-circular ribbed 'bale' stone above. Unidentified bale
tomb immediately north of the latter; Flat-chamfered base, sides
divided into 3 panels. Heraldic shield as on previous tomb within
central panel. Moulded single large diamonds in relief within
flanking panels. Raised heraldic shield as on sides at west end.
Sunken panel with no visible inscription at east end. Capping `
stone with plain margin and roll-moulded string around its lower
edge. Semi-circular bale stone with bevelled ends above. Matching
unidentified tomb immediately north of the latter. Chest tomb
immediately north to William Chadwell, died 1612. Plain sides,
raised rectangular inscription panel at east end with a border of
decorative scrollwork. Thick flat-chamfered capping stone.
Matching chest tomb c0.75m north to Dorothie Chadwell, died 1601,
wife of William Chadwell. Unidentified bale tomb cO.30m north of
monument to Dorothie Chadwell. Incised outlines of 3 round head
arches with keystones and imposts on sides. Central arch contains
heraldic shield in relief with lion rampart on left and zig-zag on
right. Raised palm leaf decoration in flanking panels. Sunken
panel at west end. Thick moulded capping stone with dentil
decoration around its lower edge. Ribbed semi-circular 'bale'
stone above with foliate decoration at either end.
