8/112 Wharf House

II

Former wharf and wharfinger's house on Thames and Severn Canal.
c1789. Roughcast on stone plinth with alternating stone quoins
also rendered over, slate roof, no stacks visible. Single large
range, 2 storeys and central attic below pediment. Wide shallow
pediment with stone banding and oval glazed oculus across centre of
band at base. Central section below has 2 windows, 4-pane sashes
(originally 12-pane) in plain stone surrounds with keystone. Two
similar on ground floor and central doorway with same surrounds
partially masked by C19 gabled timber porch. Fire insurance
plaque over (name of company not visible). Flanking wings
originally had 12-pane sash each on first floor, now half blockers
with 2-light wood casements in upper half. Door below with
continuous vertical stone surround for door and window. The side
wings were the original wharf and both retain original stone floors
on ground floor. Parapet wall at top masks slope of roof which
continues line of pediment. One of 3 identical buildings - also
at Cirencester (demolished) and Cricklade (altered) - and in nearly
original condition.
