and adjoining summerhouse to north,
adjoining north-west corner of
Hatherop Castle School
II
Large garden gateway with flanking railings and piers, and
summerhouse at north end. Probably 1850-56, as part of Henry
Clutton's remodelling and extension of Hatherop Castle (q.v.), for
Lord de Mauley. Dressed stone. Large gateways in centre of row
of spearhead iron railings linked by 6 large square piers each with
moulded cornice and stone ball finial and spearhead of, top., The
whole on low stone plinth with moulded coping course. Gateway has
rusticated arch with flanking half-height twin pilasters rising to
form plain scrolled "consoles". Frieze has plain triglyph blocks
and moulded cornice with de Mauley monogram in stone below small
pediment with flanking volutes and small obelisks sujiported on 4
balls. Small summerhouse at north end of single storey with
cornice, tall blocking course and urn finials and partially glazed
slate roof. Scattered stone fenestration, mullion and transoms of
varying size, some partially blocked, canted out to east, and with
inserted 4-centred stone arch on south front.
