7/88 Poplar House

II

Large detached house. Early C18, enlarged 1817. Coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins, stone slate roof with artificial stone slates to rear, short end stone stacks with moulded cornices. Single main range of 2 storeys and attic with 2-storey extension to left of early C18 for dairy and cheese room, now in domestic use, and rear lean-to across main block of 2- storeys. Main block heightened in 1817 above string course over ground floor windows, semi-circular date plaque with moulded edge and initials HK over original place of front door. Four windows, 2-light stone mullion and transoms in plain surrounds. Ground floor has 2 originally C18 2-light mullion and transoms to left, and 3-light to right, and new 2-light in same style to right of centre in place of front door. Entrance now at rear through C20 corner stone porch. Two small gabled dormers. Rear lean-to of 2 storeys with cambered brick arches, probably early C19, post arrival of Thames and Severn Canal and availability of brick. Small brick stack.
