Reasons for Designation

The Day Monument, Churchyard of St Peter, Rodmarton is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:

Architectural interest:

* for the original design of the tomb and its inscriptions, using high quality materials and craftsmanship.

Historic interest:

* it is a significant example of a late-C18 or early-C19 family chest tomb.

Group value:

* it forms an archetypal group of C18/C19 funerary monuments in the churchyard, many of which are listed at Grade II, that help form the historic backdrop to the Church of St Peter (Grade I).

History

This chest tomb is of late-C18/early-C19 date and retains inscriptions in the memory of a number of different members of the Day family. It was restored in the early C21.

Details

A chest tomb of late-C18/early-C19 date. MATERIALS: constructed of limestone. DESCRIPTION: the chest tomb is rectangular on plan with a moulded plinth and capping, and stands on a formerly railed base with limestone flags. It has a hipped limestone lid. The north and south sides have fluted Doric columns to each corner and the north (church) side has a carved oval table with floreate design in the spandrels and is inscribed to the memory of Anna Maria Day who died in 1831 and her sister Sarah Day who died in 1860. The end faces are inscribed with dedications to other members of the Day family. The south face panel is spalled and has no inscription.
