WINSON WINSON VILLAGE SP 0808-0908 9/259 Group of 9 mainly Howse and Bridges family monuments in the churchyard approximately 6m south of porch to Church of St Michael GV II* Six chest tombs and 3 pedestal tombs. Mid C18 to early C19. Limestone. Described in rows running from north to south and from west to east.
Chest tomb. Dated 1767. Limestone. Rectangular with carved borders to incription panels incorporating cherubs' heads. Floral drops to pilaster strips. Frieze and moulded top with high coping; moulded plinth. Inscribed to HARMAN HOWSE, and to RICHARD HOWSE, died 1767.
Chest tomb. Dated 1752. Limestone. Similar design to above tomb. Inscribed to RICHARD HOWSE, died 1752.
Chest tomb. Dated 1767. Limestone. Similar design to above tomb, except for one panel in lighter coloured stone. Inscribed to -------- HOWSE, died 1767.
Chest tomb. Dated 1751. Limestone. Rectangular with gadrooned corner balusters and gadrooned domical top; high moulded plinth. Inscribed to THOMAS BRIDGES, died 1751.
Chest tomb. Mid C18. Limestone. Similar design to above tomb. Inscribed to THOMAS BRIDGES, date illegible.
Chest tomb. Dated 1845. Limestone. Similar design to above tomb. Inscribed to SAMUEL BRIDGES, died 1845.
Pedestal tomb. Dated 1796. Limestone. Rectangular with plain recessed panels, oval to ends and fluted pilasters with cabling. Cornice top with coping; high moulded plinth. Inscribed to SARAH BRIDGES, died 1806.
Pedestal tomb. Dated 1770 and 1776. Limestone. Similar design to above tomb. Inscribed to MARY WIFE OF THOMAS BRIDGES, died 1770, and to THOMAS BRIDGES, died 1776.
Pedestal tomb. Dated 1756. Limestone. Rectangular with recessed panels, fluted pilasters, cyma top and coping. Tall moulded base. Inscribed to JOHN BICKNELL, died 1756.
A tightly packed group of tombs with three sets of matching designs, all of high quality. Very well preserved.
