LITTLE BERKHAMSTED EPPING GREEN TL 20 NE (West side) 7/90 Nos. 1 to 5 (consecutive) 24.11.66 Woodcock Lodge (formerly listed as Woodcock) - II
Large house, now 5 dwellings. Early C17 origins. Remodelled and extended c.1900. Some timber frame and brick, extended and part rebuilt in concrete, all roughcast. Tiled roofs. Original plan is obscure but was probably a large L with double depth main range with a wing to rear right, extended with a second wing to rear left and a service block to right. 2 storeys and attics. 5 bay front is all c.1900 in appearance with central entrance, 9 panel door with upper leaded glazing, moulded surround, timber and tiled open porch. First floor central 2 light small pane casement. Flanking centre are full height canted bays with small pane casements, hipped roofs. Casements in outer bays with a second entrance and an open porch added to right. Cross axial stacks with clustered diagonal shafts. Parallel range to rear extends slightly further to right. Left return hip to front, gable end to rear range with a stack behind gable, moulded cap to 2 diagonal shafts. Large 4 and 5 light flush iron frame casements. c.1900 wing extending to rear has a 3 light casement, hipped dormer, gable end 4 and 5 light casements. Garden elevation has a half-H appearance, main range has a central architraved entrance with a bracketed hood, flanking lights. Two first floor 4 light casements. Towards right end of main range is a straight joint with a stepback to a large C17 red brick external stack, offsets, moulded cap, 2 diagonal shafts. Inner elevation of c.1900 wing has a stack closely following this model. Wing to left is earlier though of similar appearance externally. Service block is linked to rear range only, gable fronted. Triple gabled right return with a central projecting attic on brackets with a small 3 light leaded pane casement. 1 storey later C20 addition. To rear later C20 1 storey lean-to and gabled additions. Interior: in early rear wing a moulded, flat headed stone fireplace with carved brackets, early C17 ovolo moulded plaster panelling, later rear wing has good c.1900 raised, fielded panelling.
