WATTON-AT-STONE HIGH STREET TL 3019 (Northeast side) Watton-at-Stone 9/173 Nos. 55A, 55B, 57, - 59, 61, and 63 GV II

Row of 8 almshouses, now 6 dwellings. 1873 on datestone. Possibly by G. Devey for Abel Smith of Woodhall Park (q.v.). Red brick. Part roughcast with sham timber framing, some tile hanging. Tiled roofs. Informal group in Domestic Revival Style. 2 storeys to left. 1 storey and attic to right. To left of centre is a projecting gable fronted bay with a ground floor flush frame 3 light small pane casement, plan band to roughcast and sham timber framed attic with a similar 4 light casement, moulded bargeboard. To right is lower bay with an entrance under a raking tiled hood and datestone, small roughcast gable with a 2 light window, moulded bargeboard. Extending further right is a yet lower 4 bay range with roof swept down to ground floor level. 2 entrances in deep recesses have 2/3 glazed doors, outer chamfered Tudor arches, flanking 2 light casements. Above right entrance is a gable, more steeply pitched, with a 2 light casement, moulded bargeboard. 3 bays extend to left of gable fronted bay. Overhanging first floor. 2 entrances with chamfered Tudor arches, 1, 2, and 3 light casements. Brackets to moulded bressumer, first floor close studding and a tile hung gablet. Left return angle is canted with ground floor 1:2:1 and first floor 5 light casements. Hip on roof. Left return has 1 bay of overhang continued with a tilehung gable to rear. Behind a lower 2 bay link block with an entrance is set back and extends to a projecting gable fronted bay with a cove to overhanging first floor which is roughcast with a moulded bressumer. Canted oriel and brackets below moulded beam to further projecting gable with a moulded bargeboard. Red brick stacks on ridges have moulded bases to multiple square and diagonally set shafts with oversailing caps, cross axial to centre and right, axial to left. External stacks with offsets on right end and to rear left. Multiple gables to rear of taller range. Interior not inspected. Attached to right gable end and projecting forward is a Tudor carriage arch with a keystone. Dentilled brick course. Included for group value.
