Barton Cottage GV II

Circa 1700, former small house. Two storeys and gable-lit attic. Built in coursed golden rubble. Tiled roof now with roof lights. End chimneys the right hand one ashlar, coped verges. South-east front has 2 windows, 3-light mullioned type, with cornices on ground floor. A single light and a 2-light attic window to south-west gable. North-west front has a small 2-light mezzanine window with cornice but no trace of a door - perhaps therefore a stair-window, in which case this could have been a pair of cottages (other stair to south-west). Small wooden firelight with oak diagonal mullion. Fireplace slightly extended to north-east, now part of extension from Railway Inn (qv). Entrance in this extension beside chimney. A puzzling cottage perhaps entered from gable end from the start.

Interior: both beams and joists chamfered with ogee stops on ground floor and ridge stops on 1st floor. Attic divided in 2 by an upper cruck.
