House and barn. An early C17 and later, former farmhouse built against a late C16 manorial brick barn 3/5 of which is now part of the house. 5-bay red brick C16 unaisled barn in English-bond, facing S with central projecting brick porch. Gabled steep old red tile roofs. Queen-strut and collar roof with one butt-purlin to each slope. Modern glazing between exposed timbers of porch front. Lower sheds on N and W of barn not of special interest. Early C17, 2-storeys, 2-bay timber framed house with central chimney built against E end of barn projecting to N. Cased in brick with floor band and 3-light wooden mullioned casement windows and dormer in early C18 in Flemish-bond red brick. Brick gable to N. Later C18, 1-bay 2-storeys red brick front extension with matching floor band and half-hipped tiled roof, then projecting to S of barn. The house has a queen-strut and collar roof with butt-purlins and tennoned rafters. The floors are carried on axial beams, chamfered and stopped. Thinner timbers in S extension. The space between the S extension and the barn porch was filled in the early C19 by a plastered 2-storeys extension with twin gabled roofs. Small-paned casement windows. A group of special interest showing the growth of a farmhouse against a C16 barn at the manorial centre. Part of a group with Amwellbury and the dovecote (RCHM Typescript).
