Details

GREAT AMWELL HAILEY LANE TL 31NW (north side) 5/8 Nos 21 and 23

GV II

Terrace of 4 houses. 1806-9 by William Wilkins (as a personal speculation while building Haileybury East India College) recently converted to 2 houses. Ware white brick and hipped slate roof. Originally 4 2-storeys, 2 windows houses facing S. The original standard elevation of each house had two small segmental arched upper windows, a very wide segmental arched ground floor window, and a similar arched entrance door on the right of the window. 3-light casement windows to the ground floor, small paned sash window above. 2 large windows have been narrowed for later C19 sash windows, and two doorways have been built up to form windows recently. Rear slope of roof continues over shallow 2 storeys rear part. Grouped chimneys on the mid wall. An interesting early experiment in terrace housing by Wilkins. Forms a group with No 13. (Matthews (1959) 159).
