House, now sub-divided. Late C16 or early C17, altered in late
C17 and extended in late C19 for Septimus Croft. Part
timberframed, part brick built. Plastered or painted brick
finishes. Steep old red tiled roofs. 2-storeys and attics. The
house was divided in the late C17 causing the peculiar plan:
unified in late C19 by addition of new entrance and staircase in
middle (RCHM Typescript). L-shaped plan facing E with 2-storeys
timberframed and brick cased range at S with weatherboarded S
gable. Low 2-storeys plastered NW ranqe has a picturesque garden
front on N. Gable to triple sash windows and canted brick bay
with decorative banded tiling on roof, sashes and French doors.
Roof continues down over continuation on riqht with large lateral
chimney. Brick C19 wing at end, pantiles with scalloped and
pierced bargeboards and canted oriel window. Two and a half
storeys corner block with English-bond C17 brickwork exposed on
Ground Floor. Upper part timberframed and lined as ashlar. C19
bargeboard and finial. 2-light casement to attic. Flush box
sash with 8/8 panes to 1st floor. Wide canted bay on N with
casements, top lights and French doors. Large many-flued
chimney. Central on E a C19 1-storey castellated brick entrance
with gabled wooden porch and small window to right with Gothic
tracery and dripmould. On C17 corner block a gabled dormer, 1st
floor sash window and segmental bay with glazing bars. Set back
on S a projecting chimney to the S wing, probably built to
contain the kitchen and service rooms with an unheated range of
chambers over. Inside N part of this range a clasped purlin roof
with the collars chamfered and stopped, and similar careful
finish to the jowled posts. The present staircase brought from
Saffron Walden in C20. 2-panel bolection moulded door to attic.
Plainer C18 door with H hinges on ground floor at NE. S part of
S wing (No 35) brick faced is 2-storeys and 3-windows. Casement
windows and flush panelled door under segmental arches. Said to
have an old fireplace inside, (RCHM (1911) 212: VCH (1912) 474:
RCHM Typescript).
