13/114 Taylor monument in the churchyard, about 11m south of the Tower, Church of St. Mary

GV II

Chest tomb; 1721 to Edward Taylor; stone, brick plinth. Flat lid with margin and scrolls in corners on top, plain chamfer to underside; plain sides framed by thick, plain ends. All on a low, brick plinth, built up at one end above path. Inscription all on lid, lettering well cut and preserved, long 's' in first part. Later inscriptions to 1764. First is to carpenter who designed and executed the wide span roof to the nave of the church (q.v.). (H.M.Colvin, A Biographical Dictionary of British Architects, 1600-1840, 1978).
