4/265 Barn at Bayton's Farm
II
Barn; early C16, altered late C19 and C20. Timber-framed on stone plinth; corrugated iron roof. Six-bay barn, partly lofted. Side facing house: approach to house runs across former threshing floor, to left of centre: double doorway to eaves, but doors missing. Two bays to left, framing complete, faced corrugated iron below, weatherboarding above: shuttered opening in upper part by carriageway. To right first bay faced corrugated iron: shallow glazed opening on right below eaves. Two bays to right exposed timber framing, 3 panels high, lower 2 brick-nogged, top flat woven wattle with remains of white render. Built-up door to right of middle bay; head to main post on right thickened towards left. Gables post and truss framing: door low down on left of right gable. Interior: 4 cruck trusses, 2 each side of carriageway: inserted sills to centre 2. One pair flat purlins carried on secondary principal rafters, square ridge; windbraces below rafters, may be added. Curved brace set inside wall framing on house side in bay on right. Three wide doorways cut in long wall away from house, probably early C20, one removing similar brace. Loft inserted in barn, but original in end bay on right: bay separated from barn by timber-framed wall to wallplate level, above 2 struts propping purlins only, no truss. Built as 5-bay threshing barn; end bay was cowhouse or stable, may be part of original build.
