Details
TRING GRAND UNION CANAL SP 91 SW 4/61 Bridge No. 134 - (High Bridge) at Marshcroft Lane - II Canal bridge. 1793-7, by William Jessop chief engineer for Grand Junction Canal Company. Brown brick with blue brick special copings. A high-level turnover bridge at the middle of the Tring Canal Cutting where the towpath changes from the W to the E sides, with long earth ramps leading up to the roadway at the level of Marshcroft Lane. Elliptical 3-ring arch over canal of dimensions of a normal bridge but here dwarfed by the height and width of the battered brickwork faces rising to a projecting brick band at roadway level with brick parapet walls. Parapets curve outward at ends and follow beside the ramps a short distance. Also known as Marshcroft Bridge. The Tring Canal Cutting is 1½ miles long and over 30ft deep at maximum and came into service in 1797. (Faulkner(1972)39).
