8/100 Thornham Hall 5/6/53 - II*

House. c.1780, for George Hogge (d 1811). Red brick Flemish bond, Westmoreland slate roofs. 3 storey with attics.5 bay centre, 2 storey single bay wings on axis. Adam-Chambers Neo-Classical domestic style, executed in extremely fine facade Flemish bond brickwork. 3 storey centre block with 4 ground floor sashes with glazing bars, central entrance, 2 leaf 3 panel raised and fielded doors with fluted frieze above and flat roofed porch with 2 simple rounded columns with fluted necking and 2 simple panel piers. Above a large fanlight with decorated lead glazing bars under a segmental rubbed brick arch. 1st floor 4 sashes with glazing bars, central sash with glazing bars under rubbed brick arch within the recessed panel under further segmental rubbed brick arch. 2nd floor 4 sashes with glazing bars, central tripartite Diocletian window with sash with glazing bars under segmental rubbed brick arch. Stone ground level plinth, first floor and second floor cut stone plat bands and attic eaves cornice, all white painted stone. Shallow pitched roof with central tripartite canted sided dormer looking out to east and west, sashes with glazing bars, wrought iron balcony above. 2 end stacks. On axis with facade to north and south slightly recessed 2 storey wings, ground floor with one arched headed sash with glazing bars under segmental rubbed brick arch set in panel under further relieving rubbed brick arch, first floor with Diocletian window, sashes with glazing bars, under segmental rubbed brick arch. First floor plat-band, eaves level cornice, both white painted stone, hipped roofs. 2 storey service wing at north, single storey internal access corridor added c.1900 at rear. Interior : plastered panelled room at south, frieze with swags, urns and dishes, peltae, husks. Arched alcove at north with reclining female figure and Bacchante filling her dish from a wine skin, all high quality plaster work in Adam-Chambers mode. Contemporary white and yellow marble fireplace with fluted pilasters, central carved panel with 2 opposed gryphons and an urn. Room above on first floor with apse and c.1840 fireplace. Central ground floor 2 bay entrance vestibule with 2 groin vaults, fluted over doors. 2 storey apsed staircase with modillion cornice. Simple rectangular wooden balusters, mahogany handrail with inlaid base. Room to north with plaster frieze of honeysuckle and urns, cornice; c.1860 fireplace.
