Details
SANDWELL MB BIRMINGHAM CANAL SP 08 NW Birmingham Level, Smethwick 9/12 Railway Bridge at Chance's Glassworks 21.7.78 (approx 160m west of Spon Lane South) GV II
Railway bridge. Mid-C19. Brick and iron with some sandstone dressings. North side spanned by cast iron I-beam. Parapet has coping and octagonal end piers of stone, and iron railings. Deck of bridge formed by wrought- iron or steel joists carrying brick arches. South side now blocked. Adjoins Canal Bridge (qv) and spans a roadway which formerly linked the northern and southern parts of Chance's Glassworks site. The Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stour Valley Railway was opened in 1852, although the first locomotive ran on the line in 1849 (VCH, p 98).
