WALLSALL MB DOCTOR'S PIECE SO 9698 NE Willenhall 11/32 Cholera memorial in Doctor's Piece Gardens - II

Cholera memorial. 1849. Comprises a sandstone plaque with round head. Inscription reads:

"The parish of Willenhall was visited by cholera in 1849. The first death by that disease took place on the 17th of August, the last on the 4th of October. In 49 days 292 persons died. The churchyard of St Giles being too crowded for further internments, this ground, a portion of the church estate was (while yet unconsecrated) first used for burials on the first of September. On 3 days the burials were 15 daily the whole number being intered here and in the church yard being 211. The dismay of the period suspended the business and industry of the town .....".
