the description shall be amended to read:
Tuberculosis sanatorium. 1898-9 by Boulton and Paul of Norwich for Dr F W Burton-Fanning, consultant to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital; extended circa 1923. Prefabricated timber frame on brick base, weatherboarded and applied sham timber flaming. Corrugated sheet iron gabled roof Brick axial stacks. Plan: Long range facing south with cross-wings at centre and at either end, the right (E) with entrance hall, the left (W) extended by 1 gable and with service wing behind (NW). The entrance hall leads to an axial corridor along the back with stairs at either end and on the S front drawing room, ladies room, reading room, smoking room and dining room giving onto a verandah; the rooms all subdivided to form wards. In circa 1923 a large extension was built on right SE corner (not of special interest). Exterior 2 storeys, the cross wings with attics. 4:2:2:2:3 bay S front with projecting gabled cross wings to left and right, left with triple gables; at centre attic gable its centre jettied out on brackets. 3-light mullion transom casements, with glazing bars in top lights; glazed roof verandah with elliptical arches with pendants on baluster posts; inside verandah doorways with overlights and Tudor arches with carved spandrels inscribed 'Boulton and Paul Norwich 1899'. Gabled cross-wings project at rear, the right (W) wing with service wing. Circa 1923 single storey brick extension to entrance on E side not of special interest. Interior: Later partitions and alterations and two staircases with ogee arcade balustrades and heavy moulded handrails. Note: Mundesley Hospital was established by F W Burton-Fanning -as a TB sanatorium for rich patients. It was one of the first private TB sanatoria and the first large one to be built in England. It was modelled on TB sanatoria in Germany and Switzerland where open-air treatment had been pioneered. The sanatorium is a large prefabricated building which was a model for a standardised design developed and marketed by Boulton and Paul. Sources: The Mundesley Sanatorium Prospectus.
