TG 21 SW SPIXWORTH BUXTON ROAD (west side) 4/10002 2 pairs of gate piers and attached railings immediately SE of No 200 Buxton Road

GV II

Pair of gate piers, flanking railings and terminal piers at north side of south-east entrance to site of Spixworth Hall. Circa late C19. Red brick inner and outer piers with stone dressings and rendered finials. Iron railings on plinth of red brick with stone copings. Octagonal gate pier about 15' tall, set back from road. Linked by a northward curve of railings to slightly shorter octagonal outer pier set closer to road. Each pier set on octagonal red brick plinth with chamfered stone base and moulded stone plinth coping. Rendered octagonal ogee finial to each pier with moulded base; base of gate pier finial brattished. Gate no longer attached. Fleur-de-lys railings about 5' tall, alternating with shorter, pointed intermediate spears; all shafts set diagonally. 5 principal fleur-de-lys railings slightly taller than rest, with shafts set square and anchored to rear with iron stays. Brick plinth to railings about 1' high, with plain stone coping abutting base moulding of piers. Mirrored by an identical arrangement of piers and railings on south side of entrance. Distance between north and south outer piers about 90'. Spixworth Hall demolished c1955. (Burke's and Savills Guide to Country Houses, Vol III, East Anglia, London 1981)
