ST22NW CHEDDON FITZPAINE CP HESTERCOMBE 5/52 Barn, Wall on North Front linking to Dutch Garden, wall on South front continued for about 100 metres
GV II
Barn and walls, Mid C19 barn, outshot added and abutting walls 1904-9, altered East front late C20. Early C20 work by Edwin Lutyens. Local slate ragstone random rubble, coursed on outshot and walls, latter with flat stone coping, pantiled roof. Plan: wall to North with gateway linking Dutch garden (qv) with barn, latter with outshot on West front for gardeners shed, abutting curved wall to South, swept down after about 100 metres including gateway and door. North wall depressed segmental headed opening wall about 7 metres high, cambered wooden lintol, studded double doors. catslide roof over outshot of barn, with ventilation slits on garden front, other eievations much altered but not visible from gardens of Hestercombe House (qv). Coeval Southern wall with semi-circular headed doorway with voussoirs wooden lattice work headed door similar to those in Dutch garden. Forms South Eastern boundary of gardens but barn, property, of Hestercombe Farmhouse, not included.
