2/79 Railway Bridge
-
GV II
Bridge carrying railway line from Taunton to Watchet. Circa 1860. Red sandstone and conglomorate, coursed, squared, dressed masonry, ashlar archivolt of arch. Single arch with splayed base, rusticated voussoirs, no parapet. Curved walls abuting bank, extended on Northeast side with quoins about 20 metres behind Nos 1 and 2 Nethercot (qv). Much of the sandstone came from the quarry situated Southwest side. This is an imposing bridge that forms an attractive group with Nos I and 2 Nethercot. One of the most impressive railway bridges on the West Somerset Railway begun in 1859 and completed to Watchet in 1862.
