Peel Park BD2

Bolton House

2.
Circa 1800-30, former modest country house, probably a rebuild of an earlier manor
house, overlooking Peel Park which was developed from the grounds. Two storeys
sandstone ashlar with 5 bay symmetrical elevations north and south, and lower service
wing to the east. Plinth, sill band, moulded cornice and parapet. Stone slate roof
with flanking corniced chimneys. On the entrance front the outer bays project very
slightly from the building line giving a recessed quoin pilaster effect. The windows
in these bays have eared shallow moulded architrave surrounds. The entrance has a
frame of paired pilasters and entablature, probably an addition of circa 1840-50.
The service wing has a hipped stone slate roof and 5 windows to both fronts, the
sashes retain their glazing bars. The west end of the main house has a 2 storey
ashlar bow containing one window, the flanking windows in similar architrave surrounds
to those on entrance front. Plain 5 bay front facing Peel Park, the ground floor
windows taller, rising from plinth.
