SOUTH PETHERTON CP ST JAMES'S STREET (West side) ST4316 7/160 Nos 27 and 27A (Little Thatch)

GV II

Detached house and shop. Probably C18. Ham stone rubble, rendered rear wall; thatched roof with plain gables to main wing, hipped to extension; brick chimney stack. 'L'-plan; 2 storeys with attic, 2 bays to street. Bay 1 has 3-light horizontal-bar casements of early pattern, with iron-framed opening lights to centres, under timber lintels, to first floor and attic; below is a wider C20 display window with toplights, under timber lintel; straight joint between bays; bay 2 has boarded door on heavy frame, and in angled return an angled shop window below and a 2-light casement above. C20 metal windows in rear wall. South side plain, and against the wall a flight of stone steps leading up to the north-east gateway to the Church of SS Peter and Paul (q.v.). Interior not seen. A picturesque building, of considerable group value with the Church and The Square generally.
