EVERINGHAM EVERINGHAM PARK SE 84 SW 6/8 Chapel of the Virgin and Saint Everilda 26.1.67 GV I Church. 1836-39. By Agostino Giorgioli, supervision by John Hayes, for William, 13th Lord Herries. Statuary by Luigi Bozzoni. Red brick, stuccoed, lead roofs. Single bay narthex, 7-bay nave with east transepts, single bay apsidal sanctuary. Tripartite entrance front with 10-panel double-leaf door and overlight with glazing bars in eared architrave in giant round-arched recess with coffered intrados. Frieze inscribed: 'B. MARIAE. DEI. GEN. IMM. CON. ET. S. EVERILDAE.' beneath pediment with moulded cornice. Lower flanking bays of 2 stages to left and right: first stage rusticated. Band with putti. Second stage has 20-pane window flanked by angels. Shallow cornice, blocking course. Side elevations: three 20-pane windows at the level of the nave cornice (which breaks forward over each) on deep scrolled brackets. Interior: organ gallery to narthex carried on slender fluted cast-iron columns and deep foliated brackets. Nave: bay intervals marked by giant attached Corinthian columns: white marble base, scagliola to fluted shafts, gilded capitals. Full entablature with scagliola to frieze and gilding throughout. Each bay of the long walls of the nave is occupied by a round-headed niche containing a statue of one of the 12 apostles beneath rectangular panel depicting in relief an episode from the life of Christ. Coffered tunnel vault. Giant Corinthian pilasters support round arch, with coffered intrados, to coffered apse lit by semicircular skylight. Apse is ringed with giant attached Corinthian pilasters between which are round-headed niches containing statues of Saint Everilda, The Virgin, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Baptist. Panels above, similar to those in the nave, illustrate scenes from the Passion. Centrepiece is a painting of the Crucifixion. Polychrome marble altar. Ornately carved altar rails with central gate. C19 font of polychrome marble: shallow dish on 8 inclined legs with ormolu claws and central pillar with entwining bronze snake. Disused Romanesque font in narthex antechamber: damaged tub with beasts, archer, and Tree of Life, under chevron frieze. The church retains all its large 8-panel doors, in architraves.
