Memorial tower. '1865' on plaque. By J Gibbs of Oxford to the memory of Sir Tatton Sykes 4th Baronet of Sledmere d1863 and erected for Sir Tatton Sykes 5th Baronet,funded by voluntary subscriptions. Magnesian limestone and reddish sandstone ashlar. Approximately square on plan, 120 feet high, tapering to spire and with 3 stages. Polychrome, Gothic Revival style. To angles are polychrome 'buttresses'. Entrance to lower stage a pointed plank door within surround with foliate capitals supporting roll-moulded arch. Above 2 bands of foliate modillions,the upper one supports central band with plaque,above inscription carried around tower: 'ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF / SIR TATTON SYKES BARONET / BY THOSE WHO LOVED HIM AS A FRIEND / AND HONOURED HIM AS A LANDLORD'. Sculptured relief above of Sir Tatton on horseback beneath a tree within trefoil-headed, pointed roll-moulded arch below jointed gable with shields and 3 stars, the whole arch being supported on squat octagonal polychrome responds with foliate capitals. Similar squat piers to angles which rest on the buttresses and which are surmounted by cornices inscribed with monogram 'TS' and pinnacles. Arch interrupts first- stage foliate band. Second stage. Polychrome band ornamented with star motif (again interrupted by gable). Above a further red band, then 2-light, pointed window with red nook-shafts and shaft between, all with foliate capitals and with polychrome star to arch. Polychrome band above carries inscription which runs around the tower: 'THE MEMORY / OF THE JUST / IS BLESSED / PROVERBS X 7'. Above,a single, trefoil-headed light with shafts to sides. Polychrome band. Third stage cornice. Acanthus and anthemion motif supports date plaque. Above are 3 lancet lights with shafts between in oriel windows beneath gables. Octagonal spire with star and foliate cornice to base and ornamented with monogram 'TS' and with finials. Cross at apex. Sides are similar, but with trefoiled niches to lower stage and with further sculpted panel to left side showing farm implements and tree.
