8/17 The Old Court House -

GV II

Manor Court House. Mid-late C18 for the Prince of Wales as head of Duchy of Cornwall. Converted to 2 dwellings late C19: first floor inserted, windows partially blocked and stacks rebuilt. Red brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings. Slate roof, brick stacks. Classical style. Rectangular plan: 3-bay front, 4 bay returns. 2 storeys with basement. Stepped plinth of squared limestone with ashlar above. Entrance to right: steps to pair of recessed part-glazed late C19 doors in raised ashlar surround with plain entablature, cornice and slightly projecting hood. Similar blind opening to right. Tall recessed central panel with round-headed keyed arch containing 16-pane sash in flush wooden architrave set in round-headed recess with rubbed brick arch. Rectangular plaque above with plain recessed panel. Pedimented gable with boldly-moulded ashlar cornice. Pair of massive axial stacks with decorative brick bands. Left return, facing The Green, has 8-pane sliding basement sashes, plain ashlar band interrupted by large 12-pane sashes under flat arches, and round-headed first floor unequal sashes with glazing bars, all with stone cills and rubbed-brick arches. Cornice and gutter on wrought-iron brackets. Rear has door to left in panelled reveal with radial fanlight, cornice and hood, first floor band and bricked-up Venetian window with recessed round-arched central panel.
