6/41 Otterspool House - and The Flat

- II

Former coaching inn, now student housing. Early to mid C18 with C19 extensions and alterations and link to a late C18 house. Main house. Red brick. Hipped slate roof. 3 storeys, originally 5 windows. Original front now faces garden. Late C19 full height canted bay projects to left of centre, ground floor cement rendering with banded rustication to ground floor canted bay to right. Mutuled cornice to ground floor. Traces of arch over ground floor left, perhaps original entrance. Glazing bar sashes, flat arched heads. 2 blind windows to left. Dentilled timber cornice. Early C19 addition to left in stock brick, set back. An entrance with a semi-circular fanlight. To road, now front: entrance in C19 gabled porch, 2nd bay from right. Central stack to front, cross axial stack on later addition. Remains of large late C18 to early C19 grotto attached to right return from garden extending on 3 sides of a rectangle, probably associated with the drinking of waters from the nearby pool, at one time fashionable. 2 and 1 storey links to late C18 house. Red brick. Hipped tiled roof. 2 storeys. Scattered casements, some leaded lights. To right on road C20 porch addition. External stack to front left. Dentilled timber cornice to rear. (VCH 1923).
