12/124 Dovecote at 27.5.68 Westbury Farm
GV II
Dovecote. Early C17. Timber frame on red brick sill, lower part red brick infill between main posts, upper part close-studded with narrow red brick infill panels. Steep old red tile roof hipped with large gablets formerly for entrance of doves. A tall square 2-bays structure facing N, with gablets to N and S, in middle of farmyard. Stable door in heavy frame in N side. The structure has jowled posts at each corner and in middle of E and W walls, unjowled posts in middle of N and S walls. Mid-height rail tenoned in-line and long straight tension braces notched over outsides of studs next corners. Straight braces to central truss with collar and angled queen-struts. Single clasped purlin to each slope is base for joist of top-loft with a trimmed opening on each side of collar of truss. Peg holes for fixing nest boxes around interior. Edge-halved scarf in wallplate as in farmhouse. (RCHM (1911)161: VCH (1912)39).
