4/42 Whitehall Farmhouse and adjoining dovecote
GV II
House. C16 open hall house with storeyed W crosswing, floor and chimney inserted in hall early C17, brick W wing mid C19 linked by tiled loggia to early C19 large flint dovecote to W. Timber frame on high sill, roughcast but stucco to front (S), red brick W wing, flint dovecote with brick dressings. Steep old red tile roofs. Originally an L-plan house facing S with storeyed W crosswing projecting to rear. 2-bays hall range with open truss and crosswing with cellar and 2 rooms on each floor. Inserted chimney against E face of this central truss with stair to S and axial beam to inserted floor. Stair in projecting N end of crosswing. 2-storeys and cellar, 2 rooms, C19, brick W wing with gabled ends projecting to N and S and large internal chimney. S front given a Gothick character in C19 with cusped bargeboards with finials to LH gable and dormer to 16 storeys hall range. 3-lights cast iron lattice casement windows with wider middle light. Half-glazed door under pentice. Interior has exposed frame with jowled posts, clasped-purlin roof and curved wind-braces. Large rectangular Gothick dovecote with 4 parallel roofs N-S across the narrower dimension of the building, the middle pair to a 2-storeys part, with large pointed-arched shallow recess central on S flanked by small windows and with 2 windows over. The windows are pointed with 2-lights leaded square-headed windows and dark weatherboarding in the head. Similar window to 2nd end of each single-storey gabled flanking part. In front a terracotta pedestal to sundial with clustered gothic shafts and small angels supporting the octagonal head. (RCHM Typescript).
