2/19 Bridge and Abutments, and Base of Former Watermill,. at Hunsdon Mill House 25 metres S of house

Bridge, abutments, and base of watermill. C17/18. Red brick 2- arched bridge and extended abutments on the River Stort, on W (downstream) side of the red brick base and sill walls of the former timberframed watermill of 3,storeys and bin floor in roof (old photograph at Mill House), demolished c1902. The intake sluices controlled by C19 cast iron raising gear are still in use on the upstream side of the mill base. Round-headed bridge arches separated by a square ended cutwater supporting a pilaster buttress. Face carried up as parapet to bridge. A group of 3 millstones are set in paving at the N end of the bridge. Hunsdon has had a mill since 1066 presumably on this Site (HLHS (1979) 35). The durable features of an historic watermill of historical andtechnological interest. Part of a group with the C17 Mill House.
