GREAT AMWELL COLLEGE ROAD TL 3510 (south side) Hertford Heath 14/9 Albans (girls' hall of residence), at Haileybury and Imperial Service College

Sanitorium, now a hall of residence. 1867, E wing 1894. A large 3-storeys polychrome Venetian Gothic building with hipped slate roofs, facing S. Symmetrical front with broad projecting wings and more elaborate projecting centre with 1-storey parapeted porch on front. Large square louvred cupola on top with gilded vane. Red brick walls with regular bands of dark brick. Offset plinth and moulded eaves band carried on stone corbels. Stone string courses at cill level on each floor and impost level to top floor. Paired lancets with Venetian arches with drip band and some voussoirs in dark brick. Recessed sash windows round headed on 2 upper floors but with roll-moulded lintel and herringbone brick tympanum on ground floor. Central projection has reserved corners with angle-stone at top: carved stone string to 1st floor at impost level, stone shafts with annulet, carved base and foliate capital in 3-light top window: and crocketed arched entrance with mosaic tympanum, carved brick arch with stone drip and imposts and nooks shafts. Doorway blocked as window. Later E wing in similar polychrome treatment without moulded stonework and with 3 grouped windows to each floor of projection. An impressive and elaborate Victorian school sanitorium.
