Details
HIGH WYCH ROAD 1. 5253 (South Side) No 17 (The Hand and Crown PH) TL 474 141:6/17 II GV 2. C17 incorporating C16 crosswing on E. 2 storeys. Timberframe plastered under steep old red tile roof gabled to E and W ends and with 3 large gables to front and rear. 2 storey gabled and jettied porch in line with large chimney stack at junction of former E crosswing with later parts to W rising through rear slope of roof. Stack surmounted by engaged square shafts. Jacobean well stair with bulbous pendants, moulded string and heavy turned balusters placed between entrance door and stack. 3 rooms in line, baffle entry plan with large internal gable stack at W end in room one step up from hall with remains of partition between. C16 crosswing heightened by 3 feet and under C17 longitudinal roof. It has axial close studded partition on 1st floor and may have been service end of re-arranged house. Gd floor extended here a little to N in C18 to accommodate a corner fireplace. Modern single storey extension on E end. 3 window front, flush box sashes with 6/6 and 8/8 panes. Brick plinth. Single storey rear extension. Modern wooden windows at rear. Interior features on Gd floor include a chamfered cross beam with ogee stops over the central room and paired axial beams and crossbeam in front of fireplace in W room all chamfered with stepped concave stops. On the 1st floor, the timbers are chamfered around doorway from staircase to middle room. This door is of oak with small scratch moulded panels and there is a similar door on the W side of this room. The dado is of similar panelling. The fire surround in the E wall is early C18 with swelled frieze and panelled centre piece. Door-beside it has H hinges. W end divided axially to 2 rooms with adjacent corner fireplaces. Stair continues to attic level with plank doors and iron hinges carried on hooks. Framework shows windows in every gable to front and rear, now blocked. Purlin roof original. There is no trace of the blocked original window, nor of the 2,4-centred fireplaces noted by the Royal Commission in 1911. (RCHM (1911) 204-5: VCH III (1912) 334). ..
