STATION ROAD 1. 5253 (South Side) Orchard Cottage to E of No 98 TL 4871 1502:2/12 II GV 2. Early C18 said to have '1719' on E chimney. 2 storey and attics gambrel roofed house with large single storey gambrel roofed wing on E. Brick base and brick gable on W. Presumably timber framed. Old red tile gabled roofs. Slate eaves courses to lower wing. Weatherboarded E gable. Rough plaster to N front and low wooden parapet with moulded capping to higher part. This has large internal gable stack on E (dated) and later internal stack built as part of brick W gable. External lateral stack at rear of lower wing. White gault brick slate roofed C19 rear single storey lean-to with chimney at W end and 3 light small paned cast iron casement. N front of higher part has 2 windows on each floor. Flat topped 2 light dormers each of 6 small panes. Flush box sashes with 6/6 panes, original sashes on Gd floor but renewed with horns on 1st floor. Door off centre to E. Half glazed with 6 panes and 2 flush panels below. Up 3 stone steps with moulded nosings. Broad frame with moulded architrave and full entablature. Swelled frieze and flat cornice returned at ends. Door in lower wing next corner of main house has similar architrave, 4 panelled door, 2 glazed. Central sash window to lower wing with flush box and 6/6 panes. E gable has 3 light flush wooden casement with glazing bars. Interior details suggest lower wing may be older. It has an axial and cross beam chamfered with concave stops. Interior of main house has exposed oak framework and remains of raised and fielded panelling to stair against S wall to W. Name said to be from a Mr Orchard. Marked 'Orchard House' on OS 25" 1879. Interesting timber framed house of 3 Periods. Picturesque. Part of group on S side of road.
